Fr Harry Vaz, a Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Bombay, has already won much acclaim from his readers and fans, who were eagerly awaiting the release of this book since its announcement. He had earned a reputation of being a Biblical scholar during his seminary days and his assignments as a deacon. He obtained a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the renowned Pontifical Biblical institute, Rome, and his doctorate at reputed Institut Catholique de Paris, France.

This book is being hailed as yet another great resource for all Christians who are committed to know and follow the fundamental teachings of Jesus. The reason for such an acclaim is that it reveals the skills of one who excels in combining the mind of a Bible scholar with the heart and spirit of a pastor for God’s flock of all ages. One can attribute this quality to his experience in the priestly ministry as well as his being a professor of Scripture at St Pius X College, Mumbai.

The title and subtitle of the book provide enough details to understand its scope. A detailed study of the most known speech of Jesus - the Sermon on the Mount, as recorded in Matthew chapters 5-7, is written in a simple and easy to understand language and a facile flow of cogent argument. He provides knowledge about the composition process of Synoptic Gospels in general, and of the historical context and the literary features and outline of the Gospel according to Matthew in particular.

He starts every chapter with an introduction where he discusses background information pertinent to the chapter. In every chapter, the main parts, sections and sub-sections are explained in relevant and suitable topical detail, avoiding footnotes and technicalities. Short recapitulations and reflections for the contemporary times serve to sum up and also indicate avenues and issues for further actualisation of God’s Word.
