Junior Legion of Mary Fun Formation Day

A Fun Formation Day for the North Bombay Junior Legionaries was held on July 1, 2018 at St Teresa Church, Girgaum. Legionaries from Jacob Circle, Worli, Dadar East and West, Sewri, Wadala East and West and Mahim participated.

After the opening prayers, Rodney, an officer, introduced Fr Anthony J. Fernandes, a former legionary, who is currently Parish Priest of St Teresa's Church. In his opening talk, Fr Anthony narrated his story of being a legionary since Std VII, and went on to share how the Legion started after the First World War in 1921 at Myra House, Francis Street, Dublin, Ireland. After studying the works of St Marie Louis de Montfort, Frank Duff gave us Montfort's words, "I am all yours, my Queen and my mother, and all that I have is yours" recited annually at the Acies, close to the feast of the Annunciation, when Mary said 'yes' to God. Fr Anthony shared how in his previous parish, there were 24 junior legionaries, who every three months would go to visit an institution. He summarised the life of the three legionaries who are in the process of becoming saints viz. Frank Duff, Edel Quinn and Alfie Lambe. Each loved God immensely, and as true devotees of Mary, they strived to do their best in doing God's will and furthering the Kingdom of God.

This was followed by group discussion; we saw how the Legion can play an important role in the life of today's teenagers to fight temptations, to be true followers of Christ and setting an example to other teens to come closer to God and not be pressurised to make wrong choices. Games and a Bible Quiz were followed by an action song and the concluding prayers. The juniors were then taken to Chowpatty beach.

Leading for the Future

The heavy rains on Sunday, July 8 would have convinced any one to stay indoors, but nothing could quench the fire burning in the hearts of the 250+ young people who gathered at the Holy Name High School Hall, Colaba. Youth Leadership Day is an annual event hosted by the Diocesan Youth Centre (DYC) – a meeting of Youth leaders from all the parishes to come and get charged to be Youthful and Faithful.

The event kickstarted at 4 p.m. with a short and meaningful prayer service by the seminarians of St Pius X College that calmed and centred all present. Fr Alban D'Souza and his team led the youth into lively action songs; the music had everyone present, including the priests and Bishop Barthol, dancing in their place.

The Resource Person, Fr K.T. Emmanuel, conducted a stirring session on Leadership. He powerfully fleshed out the inner dynamics of being a leader, exerting a positive influence on the world. His session put the 'leader' in Youth Leadership Day, offering us insights to stay motivated in life.

Deacon Ivan Fernandes drove this point home by calling the youth to help the DYC serve them. The fact that the doors of the DYC will always be open to help young people was reinforced in the minds of everyone present, even as we were given a glimpse of some events during the year. Bishop Barthol reminded us of the importance to encourage all youth to take ownership in the Church; he invited us to channelise our energies in our parishes and to tap the talents of the young.

The highlight of the evening was the Q&A session with His Eminence, Oswald Cardinal Gracias. His Eminence answered the questions with graceful ease and humour, enlightening us with his vast intellect.

This was followed by the awarding of Certificates to the CLAYM (Certification in Leadership Acumen in Youth Ministry) participants. CLAYM is a training programme offered by the DYC to potential youth who could take on a leadership role in their parishes, and later on in the corporate sector. The oath of office was administered by Cardinal Gracias to the new office bearers of ICYM-Bombay, and the newly inducted participants for CLAYM.

As the event concluded, the melody of the DYC anthem filled the night, as the youth danced to the song with spirit and gusto.
