Thane's Pinnacle of Hope

Nestled on a hill surrounded by lush greenery, and bounded on one side by the creek known as Nagla Bunder, stands the Church of Our Lady of Hope, Ghormal. To reach the church, one has to take the road heading towards Rosa Elite buildings, Bhayandarpada. Then one starts the climb up the hill, after a narrow path alongside a few houses. Thanks to the labour of love of many parishioners of St John the Baptist Church, Thane, a beautiful stone lined stairway has been constructed leading right up to the church. As one visitor to the church put it, "This church demands that you first exercise physically before profiting spiritually, by climbing 213 stairs, but it is worth it, for the panoramic view from the top of the hill."

The original church was built before 1630, and was almost completely destroyed by the Marathas when they took over Thane in 1737. The ruins of the original church were seen till a few years ago, but during the early years of this millennium, the church was completely renovated. Two huge mosaic murals now adorn the sides of the church; another mural is located on the arched ceiling above the sanctuary. The peaceful interiors of this church, situated far above the bustling noise of this city, lend an aura of prayerful silence in the midst of the comforting presence of our Lord and the maternal blessings of His mother.

The devotees of Uttan Chowk Village, Bhayandar have a special devotion to Our Lady of Hope. Down the years, they have sailed into Nagla Bunder on their boats on the feast day in April, to venerate the Blessed Mother. This year, they held a special celebration on June 20, 2018, during which a new statue of Our Lady of Hope was donated to the church, after taking permission from Fr Gerry Fernandes. The statue itself was brought by boat with great pomp, accompanied by two boats with music played by a band.

Bishop Allwyn D'Silva blessed the statue which was accorded a place of honour. This was followed by the Eucharistic celebration, with Fr Sunil Munis and Fr Denzil Correa as concelebrants. A community meal fittingly rounded off the celebrations, before the devotees sailed back, spiritually nourished and blessed by their pilgrimage of hope.

To cater to the needs of Catholics in the far flung areas of Ghodbunder Road and to all other pilgrims, Mass will be celebrated every Sunday at 10 am at this church. Our Lady of Hope has a special message for all of us, to trust in the promises of the Lord of the Covenant of Love, who never abandons us, even in the most challenging moments of our life. Let us place our trust in her motherly intercession to grant us this grace, as we approach her with faith and devotion at Ghormal.
