Deepen Your Faith Course 2018- 2019

The Deepen Your Faith Course 2018-2019 is anchored on the theme given by the Holy Father to the Universal Church - 'A Poor Church for the Poor'. We shall have reflections and studies based on the New Testament, Old Testament and Church Documents. We will take a hard look at the reality of poverty, through authentic presentations of the plight of the poor, as well as grassroots exposure. This will lead, through a systematic analysis, to a faith perspective. Biblical insights that contribute to a meaningful theology of liberation will form the basis for the exploration of a faith response, taking into account socio-political and economic implications of outreach to the poor that have determined the Church's social teaching over the years. The Course will enlighten participants on how to imbibe what Pope Francis elucidates in his latest exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate (No. 21), that "holiness is nothing other than charity lived to the full".

The Course will commence on Saturday July 28, 2018 at St Andrew's College, Bandra, Mumbai. Registration begins at 4 pm. Fr Jerry Rosario from Chennai will inaugurate the Course at 4:30 pm, followed by his talk. The course will be held for 19 Saturdays from 5 pm to 7:30 pm, and 8 Sundays from 9:30 am to 1 pm (inclusive of Eucharist). Please note that there will be a class on Sunday, July 29. Charges for the Course, inclusive of course material and refreshments, will be Rs 750/-. Please give your names to Mrs Manuela Reis (Tel: 2642 7837/99208 49111) or at St Andrew Parish Office (Tel: 2642 3680).

Protest in Bandra against 'takeover' of church land

The Christian community led a silent protest outside the civic Ward Office in Bandra West on Friday, July 22, against the proposed takeover of church land for road widening purposes.

Around 300 protesters, including priests and nuns, NGOs and parishioners of Bandra Deanery, joined the rally, some praying with Rosary and candles.

Activists Godfrey Pimenta and Nicholas Almeida, Fr Austin Norris, members of the Bombay Catholic Sabha and nuns from St Joseph's Convent said the proposed takeover of setback land from St Andrew's Church and St Peter's Church will damage their property, including the historic graveyards. The Tata Parsi Agiary could also come within the ambit of the project, although its trustees have not received a formal notice as yet.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner of H-West Ward, Sharad Ugade, had issued a letter on June 20, saying that there was "no road widening at present". "However, when we sought clarification about the timeline implied in the phrase 'at present', the officer was non-committal. Our doubts are fuelled further," said Pimenta. Ugade was not available for comment. The community fears that like previous instances, the land that is acquired will be ultimately lost to hawkers.

Laity Sunday 2018

On June 24, 2018, the parishes across the archdiocese of Bombay celebrated Laity Sunday with a liturgy to install the heads of Cells and Associations. The diocesan event was held at Dr Antonio D'Silva School hall, Dadar, at 4:30 pm, with over 550 participants from all corners of the archdiocese. Bp Barthol Barretto, bishop in charge of the Laity, was the Chief Guest. Fr Reuben Tellis and his team animated the Opening Prayer. Fr Felix D'Souza, the newly appointed Director of OLCM, congratulated all those present for their contribution to the Church in Bombay. He reiterated that we are called to make a difference, to take up the challenge of bringing Christ from the Altar in church to the many altars in the world - school, college, workplace, home, etc.

Fr Gerard Rodricks sj explained the recent Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis - Gaudete et Exsultate. He showed how the Pope had connected the Beatitudes to sainthood, through various stories. He talked of the 'next door saints' and explained that we are called to be saints, following 'The Way', in our own way and doing little things for others. The audience shared stories of 'next door saints' - from parents to teachers to Association members reaching out and making a difference. Fr Gerard reminded us to use the Scriptures and the prayer of intercession on our 'way to sainthood'. Fr Sandeep Borges summarised Fr Gerard's talk in Marathi and Hindi, helping the audience connect to the theme: 'the Call to holiness in today's world'. A short video clip of a visually challenged person caring for the needs of others gave a powerful message.

Mr Jude Fernandes, the compere, helped the audience to enjoy some lighter moments with spot prizes. Ms Rohini D'Souza, of the OLCM Team, introduced the audience to IMFE—the training for leaders of Cells and Associations, that would help them to work better in their ministry. Ms Sarah Joseph shared how IMFE had helped her in her ministry of Sunday School at St Anthony, Vakola.

Bp Barthol said that John the Baptist's mission was to introduce Jesus Christ; the laity has a mission too—to make the Church come alive. He highlighted the need to make SCCs truly "instruments to grow in holiness" and to reach out to feed the poor and the hungry.

The anthem 'I am Catholic, I am Alive' got the audience on their feet, singing with gusto. Most of the speakers were multi-lingual, reflecting the need to reach out to the diverse audience. Ms Monica Rodrigues proposed the Vote of Thanks.
