Indian priest elected to ICMC

Fr Jaison Vadassery, Secretary of CBCI Office for Labour, has been elected as the secretary of International Catholic Migrants Commission (ICMC) at its Governing Council meeting in Rome (June 6-8). Fr Vadassery is also Director of Workers India Federation, a nationwide labour organisation.

Dr Anne Therese Gallagher AO (Australia) had been elected as the President during the General Council meeting held in Rome in March 2018. The Council also elected Bishop Giorgio Bertin (Djibouti/Somalia) as Vice President and Sr Maryanne Loughry (Australia) as Treasurer and ratified the appointment of Msgr Robert Vittillo as its General Secretary.

Initiated by the joint efforts of Pope Pius XII, Msgr Giovanni Battista Montini (Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, and future Pope Paul VI) and layman James J. Norris, ICMC was precisely created to support Catholic organisations in responding to the needs of displaced persons and refugees.

Caritas offers survival classes

As India continues to be struck by natural disasters and extreme weather conditions, Caritas India is pitching in with others to help prepare villagers for when calamity strikes. Since April, dust storms and rains across the northern and eastern part of the country have killed 278 people, 223 of them in the first fortnight of May.

In fact, from 2005-2014, natural disasters have claimed the lives of 2,200 people in the country and caused an estimated economic loss of about US$10 billion, government figures show. Freak weather breakouts are believed to be increasing due to climate change and rapid industrialisation, experts said at a conference in New Delhi on May 19.

On the bifurcation of the Diocese in 1998, he opted for the Diocese of Bettiah.

Withdraw new draft CRZ: Church

The Goa Church has demanded withdrawal of the draft Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) notification 2018, saying it seems like "guidelines to facilitate projects rather than protecting the environment."

The Centre for Responsible Tourism (CRT), an initiative of the Goa Church, claimed that the notification regularises violations to CRZ, and opens the way for further depredation of the coastal ecology and environment.

CRT's general secretary, Fr Freddy Braganza, in his letter sent on June 9 to Arvind Nautiyal, director, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has raised objections over the proposed amendments in the notification.

Mission Congress for Evangelization

Fiat Mission, a Catholic lay association for evangelization, is set to hold the third Great Gathering of Mission (GGM) Congress 2019, a platform for the mission activities in India.

"The main objective of GGM is (to provide) an opportunity to share the surplus resources available with the Church in Kerala which could effectively be utilised for evangelization of India and the world," said Ceetly George, managing director of Fiat Mission.

It will be an opportunity for the established Church in Kerala to familiarise with the mission work in India, which in turn will enable it to rediscover the charism of Christ, he added.
