DB Matunga alive with summer activities

A well deserved summer break is here – both for the staff and the students. It is a welcome break after the strenuous academic year's programme. As is customary, summer camps and tournaments are organised for the children to engage in different activities and hone their skills. Don Bosco Matunga was host to the first summer camp – there are two summer camps, one each in April and May – and the inter-school basketball tournament.

The first summer camp began on April 10, 2018 and ended on April 27, 2018. Close to 500 children were the beneficiaries of this camp and participated in various activities viz. Football, Basketball, Skating, Athletics, Hockey, Cricket, Chess, Music, Gymnastics, Lawn Tennis, Calligraphy, Handwriting, Robotics, Emoticon (Speech & Drama, Dance and Art & Craft), Abacus/Vedic Math etc. Professional coaches engaged the students in these activities through fun and intense coaching programmes.

This summer, Don Bosco Matunga were hosts to the fourth edition of Don Bosco Cup – an interschool basketball tournament – from April 23 to 29, 2018. This tournament brings along a charm of its own that is not witnessed even at some of the major inter-school tournaments held in the city. The sprawling campus, the modern facilities of basketball playing surfaces, and the desire to play and interact with one another attract participants and audiences to this annual feature. This year, a total of 162 teams – boys and girls – from the schools of Mumbai registered themselves for this tourney. A record 386 matches were played in this period! The finals witnessed the presence of the members of the Management – Rector - Fr Crispino D'Souza, Principal - Fr Bernard Fernandes and Administrator - Fr Roy Noronha, many prominent figures from the basketball fraternity, the sponsors, parents and well-wishers. The organisers of the tournament included the Sports Coordinator of the school, the basketball coaches and the parents of the school.

Let's be friends

May 1, 2018 was a very memorable and joyful day for the Catholic Association for the Blind (of Mumbai), at the Sacred Heart Church Parish Hall, Santa Cruz West.

A group of five parishioners teamed up together and organised this wonderful occasion for the second time to felicitate and honour about 60 members from this Visually Challenged Group who attended, accompanied by 20 of their escorts. The theme of this special occasion was: "Let's Be Friends, Together With Jesus."

The event began with a short Prayer, Bible reading and Hymns that were conducted by the members of the Visually Challenged Group themselves, followed by a Welcome Speech by Fr Oscar Mendonca of Sacred Heart Church.

Thereafter, the celebration began with each member of the group introducing themselves on the mike, followed by music, a March for Friendship, dancing, housie, and singing with a musical instrument, talent display performed by members from the visually challenged group. In between the entertainment, snacks, soft drinks and water were served in plenty, followed by a delicious buffet lunch and prize distribution. A vote of thanks was proposed by Alwyn D'Souza and Flora Ferraz, the lead coordinators from the guest group.

It was a privilege to welcome our esteemed Guests of Honour—Mr Michael Ferreira, Mr Tony Lewis and his daughter Nicora—who graced this occasion with their presence.

We are thankful to the Sacred Heart Parish Priest, Rev. Fr Franklyn Mathias for use of the Sacred Heart Parish Hall, and Mr Tony Lewis (from Sacred Heart parish) who offered a generous sponsorship to make this function a grand success.

We are also thankful to Mr Luke Sequeira, from Sacred Heart parish, for having compered the proceedings at this function so well, and thanks to Zelda Fernandes for her help and coordination.
