Mother Antoinette D'Souza

(former Superior General of PSOL)

"I am the Resurrection and the life; He who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die." (John 11:25-26)

On March 20, 2018, the Lord called to Himself our dear Mother Antoinette D'Souza who peacefully glided into His arms to enjoy eternal rest.

Antoinette was gifted to Mr Avelino D'Souza and Mrs Anna Generoza D'souza on November 4, 1924. Born in Moira, Goa, and brought up in Poona, she was the fourth among six siblings. One of her brothers was a priest - Fr Roque D'Souza - who passed away a few years ago.

Mother Antoinette joined the Congregation of the Poor Sisters of Our Lady in 1947. She made her First Profession on March 25, 1950 and her Final Profession on March 25, 1956.

Mother Antoinette served in various communities of the Congregation such as Infant Jesus Convent - Goa, Clergy Home - Bandra, Holy Cross Convent - Kurla, St Pius Convent - Goregaon and Stephen Hall. From June 2006, she was at Holy Family Convent, Andheri. During her 68 years of Religious life, she served the Congregation in various capacities, as animator of the communities, as the General Councillor, Secretary General, School Principal and as the Superior General.

Gifted with a razor sharp memory, she knew the near and dear ones of most of the Sisters in the Congregation, and would enquire with concern about them, with all the details of the past and the present, whenever any Sister visited her in the infirmary, even as she was lying on her sick bed.

She had a long tenure as Principal of St Anne's School, Dabul from 1952 to 1967. Her teachers and students still remember her as an erudite speaker, and a firm person with a soft heart. She was a voracious reader and would go through the newspapers and other periodicals every day, till she was unable to do so due to her illness.
