Deepen Your Faith

As all good things come to an end, the closing ceremony of the year-long 'Deepen Your Faith' course at St Andrew's College, Bandra, Mumbai, was an emotional event.

His Lordship Bishop Bosco gave a brief recollection on four spiritual aspects of Christian life viz. Prayer, Repentance, Gratitude and Love. This was followed by a celebration of the Eucharist. Bishop Bosco encouraged participants to share "what touched you" at the Recollection. Some reflections presented were: prayer is an essential component of our life. That God loves us is a given; do we allow ourselves to be loved by God? Repentance is relevant, especially at this time in Lent, when we are given this time to reflect on our sins and repent. To follow Jesus' way is to be lifted up and draw humanity to us. Can we ever appreciate and thank God enough for all the miracles in every moment of our life? Can we, despite atrocities around us, reach out in love and care?

After a short tea break, a few participants(including some who have been attending ever since the inception of the Course 26 years ago) testified how and why they had registered for this Course, and the benefits they had received. Finally the participants received a Certificate of Course Completion, personally signed by His Eminence Oswald Cardinal Gracias.

We look forward to the next course which begins July 28, 2018 on the Theme:" Church of the Poor for the Poor."

We thank Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Bishop Bosco Penha, Bishop Agnelo Gracias, Fr Aniceto Pereira, and Joaquim and Manuela Reis for their ongoing support.

CCBI marks five years of Francis' papacy

Cardinal Oswald Gracias of Bombay, Archbishop Giambattista Diquattro, the Apostolic Nuncio to India, and 33 bishops from all over India celebrated Mass to mark the fifth anniversary of the election of Pope Francis at a seminar for newly-ordained bishops at St Pius X College in Mumbai; the bishops also held a half-hour of Eucharistic adoration to mark the day.

Cardinal Gracias said the bishops were also praying for all bishops in India and the rest of Asia, that they understand and put in the practice the "mind of the Holy Father - inspired by the Holy Spirit - on how to live their episcopacy and be bishops of today: beacons of mercy and good shepherds."

"Pope Francis is a Pope of the peripheries, and a pope with a compassionate heart for the poor, and love and concern for the neglected and suffering. He has great concern for youth and a special concern for the elderly, and for grandparents in particular. From the beginning of his papacy, urging youth to forge bonds with the elderly has been a special concern for Francis. Pope Francis is a pope of mercy, a pope who draws people to the sacrament of Reconciliation."

"The Holy Father often asks me about Asia. He appreciates the spiritual richness of Asia. Pope Francis underlines the importance of friendship and respect between men and women of different religious traditions. He says the word that we should never tire of repeating is 'dialogue'. We are called to promote a culture of dialogue by every possible means and thus to rebuild the fabric of society," the cardinal said.

"The vision of FABC for the Church in Asia is in communion with the mind of the Holy Father, that is to be in triple dialogue-dialogue with the poor, with cultures and with religions, and I may add, dialogue with nature," he continued.

Gracias said the FABC will hold a Pan-Asian plenary meeting in 2019 on the lines of Latin America's 2007 Aparecida meeting.

Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, the future Pope Francis, chaired the committee that wrote the final document at the meeting, and it is considered to be one of the most important documents in understanding his thought.

"This Pan-Asian plenary will be a replication of the South American experience in Asia, which made a huge difference to the Church in South America. As President of FABC, I made this proposal for the Pan-Asian plenary, and it was readily accepted," said Cardinal Gracias.
