A Journey of a Thousand Miles begins with the Right Mentor

I was lost and confused, and was getting a hundred contrasting views from a hundred different people, recalls Ethel, a bubbly 21-year-old. "That was before Take Charge happened to me. I've come a long way since then, with my mentor guiding me every step of the way. And now, I feel poised to take on the world."

Youth like Ethel are at the precipice of their future, faced with choices to make, in a time where access to technology has flooded them with a monumental amount of information and resources, but where real-life role models are in short supply. The youth need caring and responsible adults who walk the talk. Studies demonstrate that youth with mentors are likelier to stay in college, hone their personal and professional skills, have positive relationships, and develop a growth mind-set.

Take Charge is a structured 18-month long mentoring programme for Catholic youth in Mumbai, between the ages of 16 and 21 years, that pairs them with mentors who have excelled in various fields. An Archdiocese of Bombay initiative, the Take Charge programme is spearheaded by accomplished stalwarts from the Catholic community who are passionate about youth mentoring. The Take Charge mentors are dynamic, driven individuals who come from various walks of life, and have the skills, empathy and desire to commit to transforming the lives of young adults. Take Charge's mentors work with young people to awaken them to possibilities, help them navigate challenges and make sound decisions, encourage them to pursue their dreams, and inspire them to be more than they ever thought possible. The programme has already touched the lives of over 150 youth, supporting them to become well-rounded, successful, happy adults.
