Lawyers’ Lenten Recollection

Fr Salvador Memorial Award

The Bombay Catholic Sabha is pleased to announce the 4th Fr Salvador Rodrigues Memorial Lecture and Award in memory of the late priest, who was the Ecclesiastical Adviser to the BCS for several years. The Award will be given to a Catholic Individual/NGO/Institute for:

• Outstanding contribution to the promotion of Social Understanding and upliftment of the weaker sections of society.

• Any published works or a mass movement that has made a substantial impact on the quality of life of any marginalised group of society.

• Efforts or programmes towards integrating underprivileged or weaker sections of society into the mainstream through socio-economic schemes, education, skills training, etc.

The Award will include a cash prize and a citation.

Contributions made within the period of five years immediately preceding the nomination will be considered. The last date for submission of nominations (with supporting documents) at the BCS Office, St. Michael Church, Mahim is April 2, 2018 by 6 pm. Nomination forms are available on the BCS website: www.bcsabha.org. The decision of the Jury will be final.

Empowering laity

CHURCH IN the CITY organised a training programme for the Andheri Deanery on Feb. 25, from 9:30 am to 12 noon at St John the Evangelist School Hall, Marol, Andheri East. Dean Rev Fr Clement saw the vision that today's priority is the reality of Good Governance - the basics of which are conscientisation for civic and political involvement. The Resource Team consisted of Mr Willie Shirsat, President of Church in the City, Mr Shailesh Gandhi, Ex-Chief Information Commissioner & RTI Activist, Ms Reena Vasoikar, Junior Officer - BMC Solid Waste Management, Mr Ameet Satham, MLA, Andheri West.

Shailesh Gandhi explained how RTI is becoming an essential tool for Good Governance. Reena Vasoikar was emphatic that segregation of garbage is a service to ourselves. MLA Ameet Satham was vocal that governance is participation through Citizens’ involvement. The session was organised by Jennifer Kolhatkar (FILMC Andheri Deanery Coordinator) and Rosalin Ambrose, Lay Coordinator for Andheri Deanery, along with the Deanery team. The Church in the City Andheri Deanery Coordinator & spokesperson Nelson D’Souza played a vital role.

Safeguard RTI

Sailesh Gandhi ex cheif commissioner of RTI (retired) had called a meeting of RTI users to defend our RTI at Moneylife on 7 February Church in the City along with over 50 citizens representing many organization were present.

It was decided to launch #RTIBachao campaign to safeguard our fundamental right and regain our self respect. We have tolerated enough verbal and physical abuse and decided to approach our elected representatives and persuade them.

We have issued note of RTI Bachao its our resolutions, for intreacting with elected representatives'

We must make our democracy work through our elected representatives.

Career Guidance for basti kids

Mumbai Provincial Federation of Past Pupils of Don Bosco, in collaboration with Progmanmatrix Institute, conducted a career guidance session for over 100 basti kids of the evening classes and boarders of St Dominic Savio High School, Andheri on March 1.

Fr Shekhar Mariadas, the Administrator and Vice Rector of the house set the tone for the session by welcoming the gathering. He invited Pratik Upadaya, Director of Progmanmatrix Institute, who was the resource person and Amarr Prabhu, Principal, St Joseph's ITI, to give an introduction about the session. Prabhu briefly introduced the day's topics and thanked the Salesian community of the Andheri Institute - Fr Brian Moraes, Rector and Fr Mariadas for allowing them to conduct the session for the basti kids and boarders.

Upadaya explained why planning a career was important. He explained the various career options available to the youth after their SSC, HSC and graduation, government and non-government job opportunities and the various competitive exams that offer youth an opportunity to aim for a brighter future.


St Joseph ITI trains trainers

Fifteen people participated in a two-day Training of Trainers (TOT) workshop which was organised by St Joseph Industrial Training Institute (SJITI) under the guidance of Skills for Progress (SKIP), which is an all India Association of private technical/vocational training institutions on February 19-20.

SJITI has been associated with SKIP, which is an organisation that looks to enhance the quality of vocational and technical training in the country for institutes that offer training for employment and self-employment for the socio-economic and the marginalised communities.
