Ministry of Word Programme

30 Ministers of the Word (Batch 23) were commissioned on Feb. 11 (Bible Sunday) by Bp Percival. The theme - 'Rooted in the world, we share the light of Christ' - was brought out in the homily, skits, dances, etc.

Admissions are open for the Ministry of the Word Programme (Archdiocese of Bombay). The programme aims at equipping lay people to personally experience the saving power of the Word of God in their lives, and out of that experience to communicate God's Word to others in the parish. The programme covers the study of all the books of the Old and the New Testament, the document of the Second Vatican Council on Divine Revelation, and the Pontifical Biblical Commission's document on the interpretation of the Bible in the Church. The courses are conducted by professors of the Archdiocesan Seminary and other competent Bible teachers. At the end of the study stage, the candidates enter the probation stage. On successfully completing this stage, the candidates are commissioned as Ministers of the Word in the Archdiocese.

Admissions are open for the new academic year, which will begin May 31, 2018. Sr Arina in Pontifical Commission for minors

Pope Francis has chosen Sr Arina Gonsalves, RJM, an Indian nun from the Archdiocese of Bombay to help the Catholic Church protect children and prevent violence against them.

"I am very honoured," she told AsiaNews. "It is a great privilege for me to serve and contribute to the universal Church from India."

When her appointment was announced on Feb. 17, Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay, said, "I am very happy with the choice of Sr Arina. This way we will have an Indian voice with great experience helping the universal Church. Thanks to her experience, she will be able to make a notable contribution to the Church."

The Archdiocese had set up a Committee for the Protection of Minors in 2016, with the aim of raising awareness about the Protection of Children from the Sexual Offences Act of 2012 (PoCSOA), and the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act of 2013.

For Sr Arina, her mission "is to prevent [violence] and protect vulnerable children and adults by raising their awareness. The Catholic Church really wants to help children, and we must do everything possible to protect minors." Sadly, "In Indian newspapers, we read about child abuse in schools, and even in orphanages. We must do everything to protect them."

Sr Arina is among the nine new members of the 16-member Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. Cardinal Seán O'Malley OFM has been confirmed as its chair. The other new members are: Prof. Benyam Dawit Mezmur (Ethiopia), Hon. Neville Owen (Australia), Ms Sinalelea Fe'ao (Tonga), Prof. Myriam Wijlens (Netherlands), Prof. Ernesto Caffo (Italy), Sr Jane Bertelsen FMDM (UK), Ms Teresa Kettelkamp (US) and Mr Nelson Giovanelli Rosendo Dos Santos (Brazil).

Ash Wednesday at Taloja Jail

The members of the Prison Ministry of India in our Archdiocese often receive accolades for their work for the welfare of prisoners in various jails. From conducting health camps to organising workshops and providing medicines, they do it all with zeal and passion.

This time around, the Prison Ministry, along with His Lordship Bishop Barthol Barretto, kicked off the season of Lent by conducting an Ash Wednesday Mass at the Taloja Jail in the Navi Mumbai area. As a matter of fact, this was the very first time that a Mass was celebrated in a prison on Ash Wednesday, thanks to the tireless efforts of Mr Ravi Das, Mr Flavian Santarita and Mr Ignatius Joseph.

The Eucharist was celebrated by Bishop Barthol and Fr Baptist Viegas of Sacred Heart Church, Vashi, with a choral ensemble from Our Lady of Salvation Church, Dadar. About 50 young accused prisoners—six of whom were Catholic—participated in this service. All the youth were captivated by the sermon delivered in Hindi. The Catholic youth were also marked with ashes, and asked to pray to the Lord for pardon and forgiveness. The service ended with Bishop Barthol and Fr Baptist greeting all the prisoners; this gesture left many of them teary-eyed.

Award for Jesuit

Jesuit Fr Irudya Jothi, director of Udayani, bagged the Social Activist Award at a function in Mumbai.

Dr R.L Bhatia, head of the World CSR Group who organised the event along with Economic Times Now and others said their full-time researchers came out with 1284 names after strenuous research among those innovatively contributing to the development of India. The jury then selected 184 individuals and companies for the final list of this award.

Fr Jothi got the award in his individual capacity as 'Social Activist Award.' He was the only one in this category who was awarded a trophy and a citation. He also received another award 'World CSR Congress Awards' on February 18—Certificate of Merit for Udayani. "We were selected I guess for our holistic approach in our intervention among villagers," he added.

The latest awards have made Udayani activists and women beneficiaries "extremely happy" and proud.
