Fr Blaise Coelho

The original 'Media Man', Rev. Fr Blaise Coelho returned to his heavenly abode on March 31, 2019 (Born: February 3, 1936). He will always be remembered as a devout, faith-filled and spiritual priest, who always credited his mother as his inspiration for his devotion to the Church and Christ. Parishioners, in India and abroad, have fond memories of him as a kind and generous priest.

He was an accomplished writer and author of several books. Fr Blaise was sent to Rome to study Social Justice, and he followed this up with his Ph.D. in Sociology, while in Chicago. He was ordained in Rome in December 1963. His doctoral thesis 'The Parish as an Organisation' was lovingly and extensively researched. This was when he was moved to make a difference at the parish level through teamwork, and at the social level, in the lives of those who lack opportunity or guidance. For the parish, team meetings and organisation played an integral part – the parish is a community, but when the aspect of organisation is applied, an efficient and effective model emerges. The published titles, 'Think Team' and 'Teamwork' are an outcome of this experience. In his homily at the funeral service, His Eminence Cardinal Oswald Gracias expressed his deep gratitude to Fr Blaise for contributing his knowledge and expertise in updating the parish ministry in Mumbai with the latest trends prevailing in the universal Church.

Through funding raised from friends, family and supporters, and assisted by the local convent, Fr Blaise was able to run camps in Goa which provided counselling and direction for girls who had dropped out of school. In this way, he was able to reach out to the poor and the least.
