Shirley Reneta Kuttan:
Pursuing Youth Work as a Calling

Finding one's purpose in life does not come easily, but 26-year-old Shirley Reneta Kuttan seems to have found it at a young age. Though her journey has just begun, getting to this point has come with its own sets of trials and tribulations. She will soon be moving to Reading, England, to do a one-year internship programme with 'Shift Youth + Community', which describes itself as a Christian new monastic and missional movement. So what led her to working with young people?

Born and brought up in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, Reneta lost her father at the age of five. She was brought up by her mother, who took up a job a month after her husband passed away. Growing up, Reneta felt a void in her life owing to her father's absence. She got involved in her local parish, and eventually was elected President of the Youth Group in 2009-10. At the same time, she was also nominated as the youth representative to the Diocesan Youth Centre from Navi Mumbai Deanery. She eventually left her youth group to join the local chapter of the AIESEC in Navi Mumbai, where she quickly began taking up leadership positions. AIESEC is a non-political, independent, not-for-profit organisation, run by students and recent graduates of institutions of higher education. They are present in 122 countries, with 2500 members across 27 local offices in India.
