Farewell, dear Bishop Elias

Sir, The Amravati Diocesan Social Service Forum owes its existence to the hard work and dedication of Bishop Elias Gonsalves. In the few years that he spent in Amravati diocese, Bp Elias has left a lasting impression and legacy that will never be forgotten.

As the Bishop of Amravati Diocese, he brought about great progress in every field of pastoral outreach—be it education, health or social service. Today, we also have different Commissions and Committees that are functioning smoothly at different capacities. The magazine 'Amarvani' has a special space for news, and an action plan is being formulated for the Forum, so that we all work together with a common mission, vision, aims and objectives for the development and prosperity of all the people in our diocese, especially the poor. Bishop Elias put in place a system of work, organisation, plans and programmes to be implemented with action and strategies to achieve the best possible result.

Finally, it was the Bombay High Court that had to take matters into its hands, forming a high-powered committee to look into the demands of the striking BEST employees and issuing an ultimatum to them.

45th U.S. 'March For Life'

Sir, The 45th annual 'March For Life' in the United States was held on Friday, January 18, 2019, which commemorates, rather 'protests' the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalising abortion in the infamous Roe vs. Wade case. This is the world's largest human rights demonstration! The theme this year was: 'Unique from Day One: Pro-Life is Pro-Science'! Last year, President Trump became the first sitting president to address the 'March For Life' via live video.

Dr Grazie Christie, radiologist and policy advisor to the U.S. Bishops Conference, discussed how the theme embodies the current state of the Pro-Life Movement: "Science is behind the pro-life movement; for we see this clearly through medical and technological advancements. For example, DNA is present at fertilisation, and we know too, that no fingerprint on earth, past, present or future is the same. We also know that a baby's heart starts beating at just six weeks through Ultrasound."
